Postdoctoral Position in Experimental Neutrino Physics

Faculty of Engineering - Universidad del Magdalena (Colombia)

The NOvA Group at Universidad del MagdalenaA close up of a logo<p>Description automatically generated (NGUM) invites applications for a postdoctoral research position. The successful candidate will be expected to take up a leading role in physics analysis with the NOvA near detector (ND) data and to make significant contributions related to deep-learning techniques applied in computer vision for particle identification. Our research interests are focused on the study of neutrino cross sections and final state interactions (FSI).

NOvA is an active long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment, which is currently taking data using two functionally identical tracking calorimeter detectors in the most powerful neutrino beam in the world, the NuMI beam at Fermilab. The NOvA detectors are 810 km from each other, the longest baseline accelerator neutrino experiment currently operational, with unique sensitivity to matter effects as the neutrinos travel through the Earth. In addition, the high neutrino flux at the NOvA ND peaks around 2 GeV, sitting in the transition region between different neutrino interaction processes. The technology, energy rage and statistics of the ND provide a unique environment for neutrino cross section measurements.

We are seeking a Ph.D. in experimental high energy physics with the skills to work in data analysis and computer vision deep-learning techniques. Travel to Fermilab is expected and longer-term stays could be an option. The position is contingent to securing a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellowship. Applicants should send an application letter, a brief statement of research interests, a CV including list of publications and arrange for three letters of reference to be sent to Prof. Enrique Arrieta Diaz: earrieta@unimagdalena.edu.co. Review of applications will begin August 1st, 2020 and continue until the position is filled.

Universidad del Magdalena is located in Santa Marta, Colombia (11.2° N, 74.2° W), by the Caribbean Sea. The city’s population is around half a million inhabitants. Santa Marta is one of the many bays created by the Sierra Nevada, which has the highest peak (5.7km) closest to the sea (40km) in the world. Santa Marta is home of Parque Nacional Natural Tayrona, a national park with sandy white beaches surrounded by mangrove swamps, bushes and tropical forests.
