OFFER DESCRIPTION

Research Description

Our work focuses on the preclinical development of nanomedicines, which include protein-based self-assembled nanoparticles, and drug-nanoparticle conjugates, for therapy of solid tumors and hematological neoplasias.

All developments pursue their clinical translation and their transfer to the Biotech and Pharma industry. We especially target cancer stem cells that overexpress the chemokine receptor CXCR4, using a targeted drug delivery approach that selectively eliminates these cells, leading to a blockade of metastatic dissemination. Depending on the tumor type, we chemically conjugate small drugs or toxins, or incorporate cytotoxic polypeptides as payloads, to the protein nanocarrier. Using this strategy, we have demonstrated potent prevention of metastasis development and regression of established metastases in colorectal cancer models. We also demonstrated a potent blockade of dissemination in acute myeloid leukemia and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma models.

Main Responsibilities

  • Development of animal models of acute myelode leukaemia and B lymphoma from cell lines and patient samples.

  • In vitro study of the internalization and anti-tumor effect of new protein nanoparticles and nanoconjugates directed at the CXCR4 receptor.

  • Study of the biodistribution, antineoplastic effect, and toxicity associated with treatment with protein nanoparticles and nanoconjugates directed at CXCR4+ cells in animal models of acute myeloid leukaemia and B lymphoma.

Additional comments

Our mission is to carry out research into the basic, epidemiological, preventive, clinical and translational aspects of leukaemia and other hematologic malignancies.

The vision of the Josep Carreras Leukaemia Research Institute is that research will identify new therapeutic targets and enable us to develop more precise and less aggressive treatments. We aspire to understand the origin and development of leukaemia and other malignant haematological pathologies in order to be able to prevent them. We will work for a future in which all leukaemias will be curable.
