One Early Stage Researcher (ESR) position (17 months) is offered in the frame of TRuStEE – Training on Remote Sensing for Ecosystem modelling (http://www.trusteenetwork.eu/), a Marie SklodowskaCurie Innovative Training Network Action at the Remote Sensing Unit of the Flemish Institute for Technological Research (VITO) under the supervision of dr. Stephanie Delalieux.
POSITION TOPIC: Multi-temporal and multi-source assessment of plant traits and ecosystem functional properties in agriculture
The ESR will work on the development of an improved method for an accurate assessment of Plant Traits (PT) and Ecosystem Functional Properties (EFP) in precision agriculture by using and combining multi-temporal and multi-source Remote Sensing (RS) and in-situ data. Data collected at the Experimental Fruit Centre (PcFruit) in Belgium, one of the Belair sites (http://belair.vgt.vito.be/), will be used. Algorithms to improve the processing chain for high resolution RS data for precision agriculture applications will be developed.
To reach this project objective the following activities are planned:
- Data fusion techniques to enhance information extraction.
- Multi-temporal analysis of plant trait indicators.
- Generation of PT maps.
Salaries are paid under the Marie Curie system. Salaries are not published but are considered
to be exceptionally generous in order that selected researchers have no financial burdens
during their period of study. As a guideline expect circa 35k to 40k euro (12 months).
Applicants should meet all the following eligibility criteria:
1) have the background and expertise required for the position;
2) be at the time of recruitment in the first four years of research career (fulltime
equivalent research experience*) calculated from the date on which the Master degree was obtained;
3) not have been awarded a Doctoral Degree;
4) not have resided or carried out his/her main activity in the country of the host institute for
more than 12 months in the last three years immediately prior to the reference recruitment
* ‘Fulltime equivalent research experience’ is measured from the date when the researcher
obtained the degree entitling him/her to embark on a doctorate (either in the country in which
the degree was obtained or in the country in which the researcher is recruited or seconded)

REQUIRED LANGUAGESENGLISH: Excellent
The successful candidate will have a master degree (or equivalent) in environmental sciences, earth sciences, engineering or other exact science. Knowledge of at least one programming language (e.g., R, python, Matlab) is desired. Basic knowledge of remote sensing is an added value. Candidates with experience directly related to the research topic of the position outlined above will be given preference.
